December Camping: Camano Island State Park

I hate to disappoint anybody (including, perhaps, myself) who was expecting my final camping trip for the year to be something extravagant, but let's face it, December is dark, cold, and busy.  I'm happy to say, though, that I have now officially gone camping at least once a month for the entire year of 2009.

It actually wasn't the coldest night I experienced this year and the moon was exceptionally bright, so I didn't bother lighting a fire.  I was even able to take some time to sit with my dinner, looking out over the water, and quietly reflect on the fact that even though it's just a state park and I'm pretty sure I'm the only one here, a squirrel moving in the bushes next to me can still make me really jumpy.

There aren't a whole lot of places on the west coast where the sun rises over the ocean.

My campsite was somewhere along the top of that cliff.

I'm often asked whether I'm going to continue camping once a month in 2010.  My standard answer is an emphatic, "No way", though that is not to say I am done with my goal.  I promised myself in January, as I lay shivering in my 3-season sleeping bag (three seasons which, incidentally, do not include winter) that if I made it through the entire year, I would get to reward myself with an awesome camping trip to somewhere warm.  Somewhere requiring a plane ticket.  Somewhere this very sleeping bag would be plenty insulation to keep me comfortable through the night.

I haven't decided yet where that is going to be, but I think I've earned it.  I'll keep you posted.

Beautiful! I'm glad you achieved your goal. You definitely deserve to go someplace warm. You just might want to avoid international flights for awhile :-).

Well, since you commented on comments, specifically, commenting on commenting on them, I will break my traditional commenting silence... :)

(yes, I had fun with that sentence)

Indeed, you rarely do see the sun rise over the ocean. So rarely that I immediately saw a sunset when I saw that photo, and am still not quite convinced it's a photo of the morning. My conditioning emphatically asserts otherwise.

Come on, Stephanie. You've been on a couple of these camping trips. You know there is no chance I got up there in time to watch the sun set at like 4:30 in the afternoon. ;)
